S Rüger: More than a thousand words. Notes from my inaugural lecture on 4 Jun 2008 at The Open University. In the UK, an inaugural lecture is a way of informing colleagues in the university, and the public, about current research directions and, more importantly, the vision that the new professor strives to realise. Despite its name, an inaugural lecture is traditionally given a good while after the chair has been awarded.
