In generative grammar the active form of a sentence (at a deep structure level) can be transformed by passivisation to a surface passive. In the example rule given an active sentence like "harry ate the bananas" can be passivised to "the bananas were eaten by harry" by the inversion of the noun phrases; the adding of an auxiliary and past participle to the verb.
