Steve Jobs 1955-2011

The first time I saw someone using a Mac was a transfixing, transformative moment.

It was 1987, and I’d just arrived at the UCL Ergonomics Unit. The only analogy I can make to the paradigm shift it felt like, was that this guy was doing the equivalent – it seemed at the time – of reading Matrix code streaming down the screen: a completely different way of working with information. Instead of boring text, there were rich visuals and gesture. Frames were flashing up all at once, he could move them around, then they’d all disappear at once from some unknown command, and be replaced with a beautiful wordprocessor with serif fonts and cool toolbars.

There was a real world inside that tiny Mac Plus screen, to work with. This is how it was meant to be.
