Top: Compare the Gibson Les Paul Custom with the Yamaha SG1000. The Yamaha is closely based on the Les Paul design. They have the same scale length of 24.75" (the distance between the nut and the bridge's saddle).

Bottom: Compare the Gibson Les Paul Standard with the Fender Stratocaster. The Les Paul has a scale length of 24.75" and the Stratocaster 25.5". The Stratocaster has 'in-line' machine heads that keep the string path straight, the Les Paul design angles the strings outward from the centre. The Les Paul has two twin-coil humbucking pickups, the Stratocaster has three single coil pickups. The Stratocaster has the strings passing through the body and over a single bridge with six adjustable saddles (shown with its cover here).
