PhD Research StudentI work on the social, semantic web. My current main focus is my Ph. D. research at The Open University. My thesis is on "Peer Supported Problem Solving and Mathematical Knowledge", and I expect to earn my doctorate in December, 2012.
This research is developing in the context of PlanetMath.org, a popular community-created mathematics website run by the US-based nonprofit PlanetMath.org, Ltd. (where I serve on the board of directors). Technical work on this project is progressing in a partnership with the Knowledge Adaptation and Reasoning for Content (KWARC) group at Jacobs University, Bremen, Germany. My own focus within this project is "support for learners". I am bringing to bear a range of "semantic technologies" to enhance the peer learning experience on PlanetMath. I have also been developing a more general theory of peer learning and peer production, which I call "paragogy".
My supervisors at KMi are Alex Mikroyannidis and Peter Scott.

New Media Systems is...
Our New Media Systems research theme aims to show how new media devices, standards, architectures and concepts can change the nature of learning.
Our work involves the development of short life-cycle working prototypes of innovative technologies or concepts that we believe will influence the future of open learning within a 3-5 year timescale. Each new media concept is built into a working prototype of how the innovation may change a target community. The working prototypes are all available (in some form) from this website.
Our prototypes themselves are not designed solely for traditional Open Learning, but include a remit to show how that innovation can and will change learning at all levels and in all forms; in education, at work and play.
