Researcher in Data Science with a focus in Social Computing

My research effort concentrates in the area of Social Computing, particularly in the analysis of social media based on the following topics:

  • Data mining based on Bayesian modelling and NLP techniques
  • Information retrieval methods based on semantic web technologies and graph-based algorithms
  • Machine learning-based approaches
  • Online algorithms

I'm particularly interested on the real-time analysis and detection of antisocial behaviour in social media. My previous work includes the development of methodologies for child-grooming detection in online chatrooms and the automatic detection of violence-related content in tweets.

I studied for a Ph.D. (2008-2012) under the supervision of Prof. Fabio Ciravegna at the OAK group at the University of Sheffield. My PhD thesis explored the application of semantic models and machine learning approaches for the mining of social media with a focus on entity profiling.

Currently I work on the MK:Smart project at Knowledge Media Institute (KMi) from the Open Univesity, which focuses on the use of sensor data for Smart cities. Within this project I'm working on models that allows the combination of heterogeneous sensor-based data sources and social media for the creation of a so-called city observatory.

I'm a former Physicist and Computer Engineer from the Autonomous University of Mexico. I completed my M.Sc. in Advanced Computer Science with a focus on Semantic Web and NLP at the University of Sheffield.

Previously I worked on the ReDiTes project which is a joint venture between Aston Engineering and Applied Science, Edinburgh Informatics, Glasgow Computer Science, Loughorough Computer Science and Sheffield Computer Science. The project was funded by the Engineering and Physical Science Research Council (EPSRC) and DSTL. This project researched novel approches for the real-time detection, interpretation and monitoring of events in Social media.

Previously I worked as research associate at the KMi at the Open University on the EPSRC-DSTL funded Violence Detection Project with Dr. Yulan He as PI. The project focused on the real-time detection of violence and extremism from social media. During the project we proposed novel Bayesian models for the detection and characterisation of violent content in social media.
